Brazil’s looming feast of football next month and its Olympic celebration in 2016 should not disguise the fundamental problems underlying the economy and society, laid bare in a new book by journalist Michael Reed. Dominic Elliott says Brazil’s leaders need to take note of Reed’s thesis that only a return to the broad liberal consensus that dominated from 1994 to 2006 will help end a dysfunctional political system and start the long road towards reducing massive inequality.
